Advocate before the expiry of the mandate of the Constitutional Tribunal for food for Muslim children

Mihal Lobnik, former Ombudsman for Equality in Slovenia, confirmed he will submit a constitutional review request to the Constitutional Court regarding dietary guidelines in schools that fail to provide meat-free meals for Muslim children. Lobnik has served two terms as Ombudsman and is stepping down on October 26. He criticized the current Ombudsman, Barbara Zupančič, for not clearly defining her stance on merging the Ombudsman’s office with the Human Rights Defender institution, which Lobnik opposes. He also addressed allegations of inefficiency within the institution and criticized certain political groups, including the Freedom Movement, for ignoring recommendations. Lobnik highlighted past successes, such as constitutional reviews that led to legal recognition of same-sex partnerships and access to assisted reproductive technologies. Regarding the upcoming constitutional challenge on school meal policies, he explained that while some cases lacked sufficient evidence to prove discrimination, many schools adjusted their practices after his interventions.
