A human rights advocate has confirmed discriminatory treatment of an HIV-positive patient at the Maribor Health Home during a dental visit. The advocate, re-evaluating the case after initial findings in September 2019, determined that a nursing staff member acted discriminatorily by revealing the patient’s medical condition unnecessarily, wearing protective gloves during handling of his health card, and treating him disrespectfully in front of other patients. This behavior was part of outdated protocols for managing infectious diseases, which the health home still follows. The case led to a new investigation involving an expert consultant, who confirmed the inappropriate conduct. The health home had previously appealed the decision, prompting the court to order a retrial with input from the expert. The advocate now plans to escalate the issue to the health inspectorate to ensure equal treatment for all patients.
