Slovenski raziskovalci sodelujejo v globalnem astronoms-kosmološkem projektu, ki predstavlja zelo pomembno napredek v znanstvenem raziskovanju. Projektni naslov je *Legacy Survey of Space and Time* (LSST), ki ga je začel observatorij Vera Rubin na vrhu gore v Čilu v torek ob 17. uri po našem času. Projekt bo trajal deset let in bo vključeval sistemsko, celovito in filmsko zapisovanje vesolja. Na tem projektu sodelujejo strokovnjaki in strokovnjakinje iz 27 držav, med katerimi je tudi Slovenija. Ključna vloga v projektu ima Univerza v Novi Gorici, ki je edina univerza v Sloveniji, ki ima neposreden dostop do podatkov. Raziskovalci iz univerzitetnega Centra za astrofiziko in kozmologijo pri projektu sodelujejo že od leta 2016.

Projekt LSST bo vključeval opazovanje celotnega južnega neba, kar bo omogočilo ustvarjanje izjemno širokega in visoko ločljivega časovnega posnetka vesolja. Vsaka noč bo observatorij zbral približno deset terabajtov podatkov in ustvaril nekaj milijonov opozoril o spremembah na nočnem nebu. Ko bo projekt zaključen, bo končni nabor podatkov vseboval desetine milijard objektov s trilijoni meritev. Raziskovalci v centru bodo iskali predvsem dogodke, kot so udare zvezd v črne lučnice, kar bo predstavljalo veliko spremembo v astrofizičnem raziskovanju. Metode umetne inteligence bodo ključne pri analizi podatkov, kar je poudarilo Andreja Gomboc, vodja sodelovanja centra pri observatoriju.

Raziskovalka Tanja Petrushevska je izpostavila, da bo LSST spremenil način iskanja močno lečenih supernov, redkih kozmičnih dogodkov, ki omogočajo raziskovanje širjenja vesolja. Za njej in njeno skupino bo začetek projekta odprt vrata do odkritij, ki so prej preprosto nemožna. Mladi raziskovalec Eduardo Concepción je poudaril, da bo število nenadnih (tranzientnih) pojavov, ki jih bodo odkrili v podatkih LSST, tako veliko, da bodo moral biti "še bolj v stiku z mnogimi drugimi znanstvenimi skupinami po vsem svetu, da bi zagotovili učinkovito in usklajeno delovanje." To bo predstavljalo velik izziv, a hkrati tudi odlično priložnost.

Zasnova observatorija združuje veliko zmogljivost zbiranja svetlobe, sposobnost hitrega premikanja po nebu in široko vidno polje, veliko za kar 40 polnih Lun. Observatorij vsebuje največjo digitalno kamero na svetu, ki posname podroben posnetek dela neba približno vsakih 40 sekund. Z delovanjem pri tej hitrosti in občutljivosti je sposoben vsako noč z izjemno zanesljivostjo in doslednostjo zaznati številne šibke objekte in kratkotrajne dogodke. Pri tem razkriva odkritja, kot so utripajoče zvezde, eksplozije supernov, fosilni zapis galaksij, namige za razkritje skrivnosti temne energije in temne snovi ter povsem nove pojave, ki jih nismo še nikoli videli.

Pri tem projektu sodelujejo tudi raziskovalci iz Evropskega projekta TALES in COFUND SMASH, kjer se izpopolnjujejo metode strojnega učenja in jih uporablja pri analizi podatkov. Raziskovalka Tanja Petrushevska je poudarila, da bo LSST omogočil nove možnosti znanstvenega raziskovanja, posebej v področju iskanja močno lečenih supernov.
