Taking the yoke on a new charitable path

Blaž Košir, a resident of Žirov, Slovenia, is preparing to embark on another charitable journey this late July with his 45-year-old Yugo car. This time, his destination will be Iceland, following a similar trip he took three years ago to the northernmost point of mainland Europe, Nordkapp. Košir has made several modifications to the vehicle, including a complete engine overhaul, raising the chassis slightly to reduce issues on gravel roads, and adding a fifth gear for better performance on highways, though he acknowledges the car's top speed remains below 130 kilometers per hour. He also emphasized that driving at around 110 km/h is optimal for fuel efficiency and driver comfort based on professional drivers' experiences. Košir named this new journey "With the Yugo for Happy Points," continuing his tradition of combining travel with charity work. The funds collected during this trip will be donated to the Animal Protection Society in Novo Mesto, a cause he has supported for several years. He previously adopted two cats, Still and Cookie, through the society’s efforts. Košir plans to share updates about his journey on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, aiming to raise awareness and continue collecting donations throughout his travels. The decision to choose a northern destination again was not accidental for Košir. He finds it fascinating to drive on remote stretches of road where few others are present, giving him a sense of being at the end of the world while still enjoying a civilized environment. He prefers traveling alone, as he believes it allows for personal reflection and relaxation, especially given his current role as a technical teacher. Despite acknowledging potential challenges related to the car's age, Košir remains undeterred, emphasizing the importance of lowering one's expectations to avoid disappointment. His motto, "Lower your expectations," is even printed on his shirt, reflecting his approach to the journey. Košir purchased the Yugo 14 years ago from a friend, drawn to its unique charm and historical significance. He noted that parts for the car were once produced across the former Yugoslavia, making it a nostalgic piece of automotive history. The Yugo has been a part of his life for many years, serving as both a practical vehicle and a symbol of his adventurous spirit. The journey to Iceland will involve considerable expenses, primarily the cost of ferry transportation and fuel. Košir mentioned that the ferry ticket alone costs approximately €1,800, with additional costs expected for fuel consumption during the trip. Despite these financial considerations, he remains committed to his goal of supporting animal welfare through his travels. Košir's previous journey to Nordkapp in 2023 raised over €2,000 for the Animal Protection Society, and he aims to surpass that amount this time. He continues to engage with sponsors and donors, leveraging the attention generated by his unique mode of transport to further his charitable objectives. As he prepares for this new adventure, Košir remains focused on the experience itself, embracing the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead on his journey with the Yugo.
