On the evening of August 19, 2026, the banquet hall of The Sanya Taikang Tribute Portfolio Resort in Sanya, China, became the focal point of a vibrant cultural and educational initiative. Over 200 individuals, including principals, teachers, and student representatives from primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong and Macao, as well as officials from the mainland’s cultural tourism sector, gathered for the opening event of the 2026 Hong Kong and Macao Youth Study Tour and Exchange Program. Known as “Hainan Night,” this event marked the beginning of a week-long journey through Hainan, focusing on cultural immersion and educational exchange. The event, themed “A Young and Joyful Hainan Summer,” was jointly hosted by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports of Hainan Province and the Sanya Municipal People’s Government. It was organized by the cultural tourism authorities of Sanya, Danzhou, Wenchang, and Wanning, with additional support from the Asian Tourism Exchange Center and the World Study Travel Organization. The goal was to provide an immersive experience of Hainan’s unique culture, history, and natural landscapes, while fostering deeper connections between youth from Hong Kong, Macao, and the mainland. Upon arrival, attendees were greeted by an atmosphere that embodied the essence of Hainan’s tropical charm. Coconut palm-inspired installations lined the pathways, complemented by traditional Li brocade patterns that adorned the space. A warm yellow glow enveloped the venue, creating a relaxed yet energetic environment. Guests, many of whom wore traditional Hainan attire, moved through the space, embodying the region’s cultural identity. Near the registration area, a welcoming team performed a bamboo-pole dance, accompanied by rhythmic Li ethnic percussion music. Participants from Hong Kong and Macao eagerly joined in, initially hesitant but soon finding their rhythm. The sound of bamboo poles striking together merged with the laughter of young attendees, transforming the entrance into a lively celebration. Further within the venue, the island-themed photo area, intangible cultural heritage experience zone, and study tour resource exhibitions attracted considerable attention. Visitors snapped photos against scenic backdrops, while others observed demonstrations of traditional Li instruments such as the nose flute and zhuoba. Students explored exhibits detailing the diverse opportunities for educational travel in Hainan, gaining insight into the region’s rich offerings for academic and cultural exploration. At approximately 6 p.m., the opening dance performance, titled Come See the Sea, captivated the audience. Dancers used flowing movements to depict the ebb and flow of ocean waves, encapsulating the serene beauty of the South China Sea. This performance officially launched the event, setting the tone for the week ahead. In her speech, Wang Hejiao, Deputy Secretary-General of the Hainan Provincial People’s Government, highlighted the growing significance of youth exchanges between Hong Kong, Macao, and the mainland. She noted that in 2025, over 10,000 Hong Kong and Macao students visited Hainan for study tours, with two-way exchanges showing increasing momentum. Since the launch of the Free Trade Port’s “Riding the Waves Program” in 2023, nearly 30 universities in Hong Kong and Macao had participated, drawing more than 1,500 students. Among them, 200 were enrolled in Hong Kong and Macao universities, underscoring the expanding reach of these initiatives. As the event concluded, the participants prepared to embark on a week-long journey across Hainan, engaging in cultural experiences, educational activities, and community interactions designed to deepen mutual understanding and foster lasting friendships. The success of “Hainan Night” signaled a promising start to the 2026 program, reinforcing its role as a vital platform for interregional youth engagement.
