Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works division, in collaboration with the U.S. Air Force's Test Pilot School, demonstrated the autonomous capabilities of the experimental fighter jet X-62A Vista during a series of test flights. The aircraft used artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze live sensor data and perform 27 intercept maneuvers against a simulated attack by a two-engine Northrop T-38. These tests were conducted at Edwards Air Force Base in California using the 'Legion Pod' sensor system, which provided infrared search and track (IRST) data. The AI-based software calculated interception paths and executed maneuvers based on this real-time information, marking a significant step toward AI-assisted aerial combat. Lockheed Martin achieved this integration in just three months using its proprietary AI development framework called 'Supermassive,' significantly speeding up the process compared to traditional methods.
