A report by WWF Greece reveals persistent plastic pollution along Greek beaches, with plastic accounting for 80% of collected waste. While there are early signs of improvement in some categories, such as a 18% reduction in overall litter on 15 monitored beaches, plastic waste levels still exceed EU thresholds. Cigarette butts remain the most commonly found item, making up 24.8% of all recorded litter. The study also marks the first documentation of microplastics on Greek beaches, highlighting their potential ecological risks. Volunteers participated in the 'Adopt a Beach' program, collecting over 464,935 pieces of waste across 204 beaches between 2021 and 2026.
