Kenya’s Amboseli ecosystem is grappling with a disturbing wave of elephant deaths attributed to a mysterious illness. At least 19 elephants, mostly females and young males, have perished since June, according to reports from local conservation groups and wildlife officials. Farmers living adjacent to the affected areas have also voiced growing concern. Noah Saatia, a farmer and chairman of the Kimana community, stressed that the local population views elephants as vital to the region’s economy and ecology. “We don’t know what’s causing the elephants’ deaths, the government needs to investigate,” he said. His comments reflect a broader anxiety among residents who fear that the situation could escalate, posing risks to livestock and even human health.
