WKÖ President Martha Schultz has distanced herself from Viennese Chamber Leader Ruck

The Austrian economic chamber's internal conflict has escalated with sharp exchanges within the ÖVP's economic wing, as WKÖ President Martha Schultz distances herself from Vienna Chamber Chief Walter Ruck. The controversy centers around allegations of questionable statements made by Ruck, which have drawn criticism from key figures within Austria’s business community and political landscape. Schultz, head of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, issued a clear critique of her colleague in a recent statement to Der Standard. Her remarks effectively amount to a call for distrust and an implicit demand for Ruck’s resignation. “We are currently undergoing a reform process to gradually restore the trust lost in the past,” she stated. “This makes me all the more disturbed by Ruck’s comments, which do not align with our worldview or the culture of decision-making we uphold.” She expressed confidence that Ruck is aware of the implications of his statements and would take appropriate steps to prevent further damage to the economic chamber. However, the situation appears to be intensifying with reports of internal discussions involving Ruck’s influence over appointments and decisions within the Vienna Economic Chamber. Last Friday, the Kronen Zeitung and Profil published transcripts of conversations allegedly held by Ruck in private settings. These documents suggest that Ruck exerted influence over post assignments. According to the reports, Ruck reportedly instructed his deputy in the Vienna Economic Chamber, Margarete Kriz-Zwittkovits, not to run in the Vienna election, thereby enabling one of his sons to secure a list position. Additionally, the transcripts mention Ruck’s involvement in recommending former ÖVP Vienna leader Manfred Juraczka for the role of second managing director at the Economic Agency. This recommendation was made directly to the mayor of Vienna without a formal tender process. While the city administration indicated that such a procedure might not have been strictly necessary, previous years had seen such tenders conducted regularly. Ruck denied the claims through a spokesperson, stating they could not be confirmed. His colleague Kriz-Zwittkovits supported him, asserting that the portrayal of her withdrawing her candidacy under orders did not reflect reality. She emphasized that her decision not to stand as a leading candidate was entirely voluntary. The campaign against Ruck, according to her, is baseless. Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker of the ÖVP called for clarification regarding these allegations. If the accusations prove true, they must lead to consequences, he stated. He described the media-reported statements as deeply troubling and contradictory to the party’s views on women and politics. The Vienna ÖVP also clarified its stance, emphasizing that it fundamentally opposes the kind of political understanding depicted in the reports. They noted that any personnel changes should be decided upon by the economic union and the economic chambers themselves. Opposition leaders have voiced their disapproval. FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl previously characterized Ruck’s statements as indicative of a disturbing picture of power abuse, favoritism, and deep disdain for members of his own organization. He deemed Ruck politically unacceptable and urged immediate resignation. Sigrid Maurer, the vice-chairwoman of the Greens parliamentary group, criticized the leaked conversation transcripts, describing them as reflecting a political understanding incompatible with modern democracy.
