Viewers warned latest episodes of new ‘Fauda’ season are disturbingly real

Viewers of the popular Israeli television series Fauda have been advised that the seventh and eighth episodes of its fifth and final season contain content that may be deeply unsettling due to their direct connection to the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023. This marks the first time in the show's history that specific episodes have been explicitly linked to real-world events, drawing attention to the profound impact of the conflict on both the narrative and the individuals involved in its production.

The production company, Yes, issued a statement acknowledging the sensitivity of these episodes, emphasizing that they depict the events of October 7 in detail. They noted that viewers who find the content too distressing can choose to skip these episodes without disrupting the overall storyline, which continues in the following episode. In a gesture recognizing the public importance of these episodes, they were made freely accessible on the Yes website to all Israelis.

The fifth season of Fauda, which began airing several weeks prior, is anticipated to be the show's last. While a release date on the streaming platform Netflix has not yet been announced, the season has already sparked significant discussion among audiences and critics alike. The creators, Lior Raz and Avi Issacharoff, faced the challenge of adapting the script after the events of October 7, given the ongoing war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the personal experiences of the cast and crew during this period.

Notably, actor Idan Amedi, who had participated in previous seasons, sustained serious injuries in an explosion while serving in the Combat Engineering Corps reserves in Gaza in January 2024. Although he has since recovered, he does not appear in the new season. Another long-time crew member, Matan Meir, was tragically killed in December 2023 by a blast from a booby-trapped tunnel near a mosque in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza. His memory was honored in the first episode of the season.

Lior Raz, who also serves as the lead actor, was overseas on October 7 and returned to Israel the following day to assist with the volunteer organization Brothers in Arms, which established a command center to aid those trapped in the south under heavy fire. The revised season is set two years post-October 7, exploring the aftermath of the Hamas attack and its effects on the characters.

In the initial episodes, the story follows Eli (played by Yaakov Zada-Daniel) and Salem (Bian Anteer), a Bedouin tracker, as they journey to Marseille to track down Hamas operatives responsible for devastating their lives and families on October 7. The season features international star Melanie Laurent, known for her role in Inglourious Basterds, who portrays Anne, a character who joins the fighters in Marseille during part of their mission.

As the season progresses, Steve (Doron Ben-David) and Doron Kavillo (Raz) become involved, highlighting the psychological toll of the events of October 7 on the characters, including symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. Kavillo, in particular, struggles with gaps in his memory related to that day. The filming locations included southern Israel and Budapest, reflecting the broader themes of the season, such as the anti-war sentiments observed internationally.

The episodes depicting October 7 are described as intense and emotionally challenging, offering a visceral portrayal of the events through the perspective of the undercover agents of the Fauda team as they pursue Palestinian terrorists. Given the historical context of the attacks, where thousands of Hamas militants breached the border into Israel, resulting in over 1,200 fatalities and the abduction of more than 250 individuals, the episodes delve into the chaos experienced during the raids and massacres in the kibbutzim and the desperate attempts of attendees at the Nova rave to escape rockets and terrorists in surrounding areas.
