The research, conducted by primary sector economist Peter MacIntyre, highlights the growing impact of these animals on agricultural productivity and biodiversity. The findings suggest that many landowners significantly underestimate the number of wild deer on their properties, leading to unanticipated economic consequences. According to the study, the deer population in the region has surged dramatically over the last decade. Landowners report that the numbers have grown exponentially, often due to initial releases intended for hunting purposes, which were not effectively managed. This unchecked growth has led to severe grazing pressure on both cultivated and native vegetation. For instance, Porangahau farmer Sam Stoddart estimates that approximately 800 deer regularly encroach upon his property, consuming crops such as kale before they mature. These deer consume roughly the equivalent of 1,200 sheep annually, which could generate around $145,000 in income for Stoddart. Instead, he faces the loss of valuable land use opportunities and suffers damage to native flora. The research involved interviews with 14 landowners, revealing widespread concern over the ecological and economic implications of the expanding deer population. Rural economist Peter MacIntyre described the situation as "a rather depressing story," noting that participants had experienced significant losses to native ecosystems and forage crops. One landowner, who believed he had only 50 deer on his property, discovered through thermal imaging that the actual number was close to 300. This discrepancy underscores the challenge landowners face in accurately assessing the scale of the issue. The study was organized by Marie Taylor from Plant Hawke's Bay and supported by several organizations, including the Hawke's Bay Regional Council, the Joan Fernie Charitable Trust, and the Pan Pac Environmental Trust. Taylor emphasized that the increasing deer numbers pose a serious threat to both agricultural production and biodiversity. She explained that while the forest canopy might appear healthy, the ground layer is being depleted as deer selectively graze on preferred species. This pattern leads to a gradual erosion of native plant diversity. Economic analysis from the study indicates that when 100 deer derive half their annual food supply from productive pastures, the associated losses exceed $10,000 per year. Over a ten-year period, accounting for an 8.4 percent discount rate, these losses accumulate to more than $100,000 in forgone value. MacIntyre noted that the potential for doubling these losses arises when farmers avoid planting high-value crops due to fears of deer damage. To mitigate these impacts, MacIntyre proposed the implementation of electric fencing as a more cost-effective solution compared to traditional fencing methods. He estimated that electric fencing could cost around $8,000 per kilometre, significantly lower than the $40,000 per kilometre for conventional fencing. However, he stressed that collaborative efforts among neighboring landowners would enhance the effectiveness and affordability of such measures. Taylor echoed this sentiment, advocating for community-based initiatives to protect shared resources through coordinated fencing strategies.
