Vienna once again in second place in the Economist's ranking of the world's most liveable cities

Vienna has once again ranked second in the 'Global Liveability Index' published by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), behind Copenhagen. This marks the first time since 2022 that Vienna did not hold the top position. The ranking evaluates 173 cities based on 30 indicators across five categories: stability, health, education, culture and environment, and infrastructure. Vienna lost points primarily due to a decline in stability, influenced by terror threats such as planned attacks on a Taylor Swift concert in 2024 and a train station in early 2025. While Western Europe continues to lead in terms of quality of life, regional stability scores have been affected by rising crime rates, terrorism concerns, and xenophobia. Meanwhile, cities in the Middle East and North Africa experienced significant declines in rankings due to ongoing conflicts.

Vienna misses first place: Copenhagen is most livable city

The article reports on the latest Global Liveability Index rankings, where Copenhagen retained its position as the most livable city, surpassing Vienna. The ranking, published by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), evaluates cities across categories such as stability, education, and infrastructure. Copenhagen received top scores in all evaluated areas, while Vienna came in second. Other major cities like Melbourne, Geneva, and Sydney followed. The report highlights improvements in healthcare in Chinese cities contributing to Asia's overall rise in the rankings. However, instability in the Middle East, particularly due to the Iran conflict, led to significant drops in liveability scores for cities in the region. Damascus remains the least livable city despite some improvements in healthcare since the 2024 power shift in Syria.
