Global rice yields are suffering more from extreme heat spikes during critical growth phases than from gradual temperature increases, according to field experiments conducted by researchers at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research. The study analyzed data from 214 paired observations across 12 major rice-growing regions in China, including both published research and new experiments. These findings reveal that current climate models underestimate the impact of high temperatures on rice production, particularly when they occur during the plant’s reproductive phase, when panicles, flowers, and grains develop. Exposure to temperatures above 30°C during this period reduced yields by 1.1–1.8% per day, primarily due to disruptions in seed formation, pollination, and nutrient transport. This has significant implications for food security since rice provides sustenance for over half the world’s population.
