Classical scholar Daniel Mendelsohn, who translated The Odyssey in 2017, dismissed concerns about authenticity, pointing out that mythological figures are inherently symbolic and not bound by strict realism. He noted that characters like Helen were born from a swan’s egg, making literal interpretations impractical. Mendelsohn also highlighted that other actors, such as Matt Damon, have played roles without facing similar scrutiny, despite their lack of resemblance to ancient Greeks. Another point of contention has been the casting of transgender actor Elliot Page, who plays a Greek soldier involved in the Trojan Horse deception. Rumors had previously suggested he might portray Achilles, leading to backlash from conservative media. Rob Finnerty, host of Newsmax, criticized the choice, comparing it unfavorably to Brad Pitt’s portrayal of Hector in the film Troy. Finnerty mocked the idea of a trans actor playing a legendary warrior, calling it a reflection of progressive norms.
