The United Tribals Associations Alliance (UTAA) has issued an ultimatum to the BJP-led government in Goa, demanding the implementation of political quotas for Scheduled Tribes (STs) by December 10, prior to the 2027 assembly elections. UTAA President Prakash Velip accused Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant of failing to honor promises regarding the timeline for completing the reservation process. Although Parliament approved a bill in August 2025 to grant a 10 percent quota to tribals, the Bombay High Court recently stayed the central government's notification, citing the need to wait for the results of the ongoing socio-economic and caste census. Tribal activists argue that waiting for the census could delay the implementation until the 2032 elections, rendering the current push ineffective. In response to the legal challenge and political pressure, CM Sawant traveled to New Delhi to coordinate a strategy to appeal the high court stay to the Supreme Court.
Bias read (Progressive): The article frames the government's actions as 'damage control' and 'papering over flaws,' while highlighting the 'unacceptable' nature of delays according to tribal activists, creating a narrative of governmental negligence against a legitimate demand.
