Weather: Severe storms cause injuries and heavy damage in Germany

A severe thunderstorm hit Reutlingen in Germany early in the morning, causing flooding on several streets and triggering a prolonged response by firefighters and police. Approximately 6,000 households in the city center lost power for over an hour due to lightning striking during the storm. The storm also affected surrounding areas, leading to blocked drainage systems and temporary road closures. No injuries were reported in Reutlingen. In Upper Bavaria, six soldiers were injured when lightning struck their campsite during a thunderstorm. Five suffered minor injuries, while one was moderately hurt. It appears an 18-year-old soldier was directly struck by lightning. Additionally, a regional train in Middle Franconia derailed after hitting a fallen tree caused by the storm, forcing passengers to evacuate and requiring alternative transportation arrangements. At Nuremberg Airport, flight operations were temporarily halted as crews dealt with fallen trees, roof damage, and water damage. Over 3,000 emergency calls were received within five hours, with around 3,000 personnel responding to approximately 1,100 incidents.
