The reduced depth of the river has forced ships to carry lighter loads, affecting both efficiency and volume. For instance, a ship recently unloaded only 350 tons of feed pellets instead of the planned 1,000 tons. This limitation is due to the vessel’s draft being restricted to just 1.5 meters, compared to 2.8 meters under normal conditions. As a result, more ships are required to move the same amount of cargo, leading to irregular arrival schedules and delays. These disruptions have had measurable effects on the port’s throughput. According to data, the first half of 2026 saw a 27 percent reduction in the volume of goods handled via waterways compared to the same period in 2025. The situation is not new; even earlier in the year, the water level fell below the long-term average, with measurements at Korneuburg showing a deficit of around 50 centimeters. Winter ice further complicated matters, but as the ice melted in February, navigation resumed, creating a backlog of vessels waiting to unload their cargo. Despite these challenges, the Hafen Wien continues to operate without complete disruption. The port has sufficient storage capacity to manage the current situation. Over 65,000 square meters of covered warehouse space are available, allowing for temporary storage of goods when shipments are delayed. This infrastructure supports the multimodal logistics network connecting the port to rail and road networks. When river transport becomes difficult, goods can be stored temporarily and later transferred to trucks or trains, ensuring continuity in supply chains. This flexibility is crucial during periods of extreme weather conditions. A notable example occurred in 2024, when severe flooding led to the closure of the ports of Freudenau and Albern to protect the internal areas from damage. During the peak of the flood, water levels in Korneuburg reached over seven meters, highlighting the potential for both extremes to affect operations. While the current situation involves lower water levels, the port’s ability to adapt underscores its resilience. Looking ahead, the outcome of the upcoming months will depend largely on whether the water levels improve.
