Scientists have developed a method to generate controlled miniature rotations using only water surface flows, without electricity, magnets, or chemicals. Researchers from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Suzhou Institute of Nano-tech and Nano-bionics (SINANO) created a 3D-printed component with a spiral channel that allows a floating object to rotate in a single direction when moved at higher speeds. This occurs due to the formation of small vortices that create directional motion, similar to a ratchet mechanism. The study, published in Science Advances, demonstrates potential applications in assembling fine fiber bundles for use in data center cables, medical sutures, and artificial muscles. Traditional braiding methods fail at such small scales, but this technique avoids mechanical contact, enabling precise control over helical structure creation.
