WATCH: SA Player of the Year Aiden Markram sets sights on Proteas home summer and World Cup glory

Aiden Markram, South Africa’s latest Men’s Player of the Year, has set his sights on guiding the Proteas to success during the upcoming home international season and the ODI World Cup, scheduled to be held in South Africa in October 2027. The 31-year-old opener received the prestigious honor after a standout performance across all three formats of the game last year, highlighted by his crucial century in the second innings of the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s. This victory marked the Proteas' first major ICC title in 27 years. Markram, who was the leading run-scorer for South Africa in the T20 World Cup earlier this year with 286 runs, expressed his desire to help the team achieve greater collective success. Despite his personal achievements, he emphasized the importance of securing a major white-ball trophy, particularly with the ODI World Cup set to be hosted domestically for the first time in 24 years. Speaking at the Sandton Convention Centre, Markram acknowledged the team's accomplishments while reflecting on his own journey. “I did some incredible things as a team. That's ultimately what you work for,” Markram stated. He admitted feeling that he had more to give personally, noting that frequent matches might have made it difficult to fully appreciate his contributions. However, he stressed that the recognition was shared among his teammates, many of whom were also nominated for the award. Markram’s focus is now firmly on the upcoming home season, which promises to be one of the most significant in recent memory. With Australia, Bangladesh, and England set to tour South Africa, the Proteas will face formidable competition. Markram expressed enthusiasm about playing in front of local fans, acknowledging the absence of Test matches at home in recent times. “It's quite a pity we haven't played Test cricket in front of our own fans,” he remarked. “We can have different conversations from there. It's going to be nice to play Test cricket in front of our own fans again.” He added that facing strong teams like Australia and England, along with the emerging pace attack from Bangladesh, would create exciting opportunities for the Proteas. The upcoming series will serve as crucial preparation for the ODI World Cup, which South Africa will host in 2027. Markram emphasized the need to ensure that these matches contribute significantly to the team’s readiness for the global event.
