A study conducted in Finland suggests that screen time might not inherently harm children's cognitive development, challenging long-standing concerns about excessive digital media consumption among young people. Researchers from the universities of Jyväskylä and Ostfinnland found a link between higher screen time starting in childhood and improved cognitive processing during adolescence. The findings emphasize that digital media should not be universally condemned but rather evaluated based on their content and how they interact with physical activity. The research explored how movement, inactivity, and screen time affect mental abilities from early childhood through adolescence, while also examining potential gender differences and the role of sports intensity. According to the data collected, digital media can indeed support the cognitive processes of adolescents. However, the type of content used on screens plays a crucial role. Educators and parents are encouraged to promote applications and games that require active thinking, problem-solving skills, creativity, and genuine learning. Petri Jalanko, the lead doctoral student from the University of Jyväskylä, explained that screen time should not be outright criticized. Instead, he emphasized the importance of finding the right balance between physical activity and media usage that challenges the mind. He noted that the study highlights the complex interplay between movement, inactivity, and cognitive performance, which varies depending on gender, type of sport, and measurement method. In particular, the study observed differences between genders. For girls, regular light daily movements since childhood were associated with better working memory in adolescence. Among boys, this advantage was more pronounced when they participated in guided sports programs such as football or swimming training from an early age. In cognitive tests measuring reaction speed, memory, and concentration, those who engaged in structured sports performed best. However, data collected solely through heart rate and motion sensors showed no correlation with cognitive performance. This discrepancy arises because sensors track physical movement but fail to capture the qualitative and intellectual demands of activities. Jalanko stated that the study underscores the multifaceted relationship between movement, inactivity, and cognitive performance. The effects depend not only on gender but also on the type of sport and the method of measurement. To establish clear cause-and-effect relationships, future intervention studies are needed. The researchers aim to demonstrate that the term "screen time" may be outdated. Whether a teenager spends five hours scrolling through TikTok feeds or using that same time to master complex strategy games, learn programming, or solve intricate digital puzzles makes a significant difference for the brain. Additionally, the study questions the myth that all forms of physical activity contribute equally to mental sharpness. What matters more is whether the body and mind are both engaged during physical activity. The results come from an eight-year longitudinal study (PANIC Study) on physical activity and nutrition in childhood. The study included 124 girls and 136 boys with an average age of 15.8 years. Physical activity and sitting times were recorded using sensors and questionnaires, while learning ability, attention, and working memory were assessed. The findings challenge conventional wisdom and suggest that the impact of digital media on cognitive development depends largely on its nature and how it complements other aspects of a child's life.
