Volkswagen has initiated a recall of over 72,700 electric vehicles worldwide due to potential battery cell defects that could cause fires in extreme cases. In Austria, 650 ID models and 200 Cupra Born vehicles are affected. The issue was identified through internal quality checks, which revealed that certain high-voltage battery cells did not meet quality standards. No property or personal injuries have been reported yet. Affected vehicles were produced between 2022 and 2025 for most models, while the Cupra Born was manufactured between 2022 and 2024. Owners are being informed by mail and advised to charge their vehicles only up to 80% capacity until repairs are completed. Some vehicles may require a software update rather than a battery replacement. This follows another recent recall in late September related to a corrosion-prone steering bolt affecting five million vehicles globally.
