Extreme heat waves sweeping Europe have claimed thousands of lives this summer, with northern countries bearing the brunt of the crisis. In contrast, Slovenia appears to have fared better than many of its neighbors, according to data analyzed by the National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ). The institute has been examining the correlation between heatwaves and mortality rates since 1999, with findings indicating that Slovenia has not experienced a statistically significant increase in deaths during recent heat episodes. This stands in sharp contrast to other European nations, particularly in the north, which have faced severe consequences from the extreme temperatures. The analysis conducted by NIJZ covers the period from May to the end of September each year. For the years 1999 through 2023, the results show that after 2016, the situation remained stable, with no notable rise in deaths linked to heatwaves. However, between 1999 and 2015, there were instances of higher-than-expected mortality in certain years, including 2006, 2007, 2014, and 2015. These excess deaths, though present, were significantly lower compared to some other European countries. In Ljubljana, the capital city, the impact of heatwaves is mitigated somewhat by its urban layout, characterized by dense building structures and limited green spaces. This configuration can create what experts refer to as a "heat island effect," where urban areas retain more heat than surrounding rural regions. Despite these challenges, the data suggests that Slovenia's overall response to heat-related health risks has been relatively effective compared to other parts of Europe. Across Europe, the situation has been dire. The current heatwave, part of a broader pattern driven by a high-pressure system known as a heat dome, has affected much of the continent. From the British Isles to the Mediterranean, firefighters have been battling devastating wildfires that have forced mass evacuations, destroyed homes, and crippled public infrastructure. According to EuroMOMO, a European network monitoring mortality, France, Germany, and Belgium have been the hardest-hit countries. These nations recorded a surge in excess deaths, approximately 16,000 more than average, in just one week during June alone. This figure surpasses even the highest levels typically observed during winter flu seasons. Experts point to the lack of preparedness in northern Europe as a key factor behind the high death toll. Unlike southern European countries, where populations and healthcare systems have long been accustomed to hot summers, northern nations have struggled to adapt. Climate control measures such as air conditioning are rare in these regions and often the subject of political and environmental debates. Additionally, architectural designs in northern Europe prioritize retaining heat during colder months, which can turn into a deadly trap during heatwaves. Historically, Europe has faced several lethal heatwaves. The most infamous occurred in 2003, when the heatwave claimed over ten thousand lives and triggered a major public health crisis. Another significant event took place in July 2022, when the continent recorded more than 16,000 excess deaths in a single week. At that time, the worst conditions were concentrated in the south, where temperatures reached as high as 46 degrees Celsius in Spain. Northern Europe, however, largely avoided the worst of the heat. This year’s heatwave marks a new record, with June being the hottest on record in Western Europe. Scientists warn that such extreme weather events are inevitable outcomes of global warming and that the worst is likely yet to come. As climate change continues to reshape the planet, the ability of countries to prepare for and respond to heatwaves will become increasingly critical. While Slovenia seems to have managed the challenge more effectively than many of its neighbors, the broader implications for public health and infrastructure remain a pressing concern across the region.
