FlixBus has revived a controversial route, worshippers complain

A bus route numbered 666 has returned to service in Poland after being temporarily renamed in 2023 due to public backlash over its symbolic connotations. The route, operated by FlixBus, connects Kraków with the Baltic seaside resort of Hel, a popular summer destination known for its sandy beaches and historic architecture. The journey takes approximately 13 hours and passes through several major Polish cities, including Warsaw. The decision to reintroduce the number 666 was made deliberately as part of a marketing strategy aimed at increasing visibility for the route. The number 666 had previously sparked controversy among conservative and religious groups in Poland. It is widely recognized in Christian tradition as the "number of the beast," associated with the devil or Satan. This association became even more pronounced because the name "Hel" is just one letter different from "Hell" in English, leading to unintended interpretations. For years, local transport company PKS Gdynia had been operating a bus route to Hel under the number 666, earning it the nickname “Highway to Hell” among some residents. This led to complaints from citizens who found the number offensive, particularly within religious communities. In response to these concerns, FlixBus changed the route number to 669 in 2023. Officials from PKS Gdynia stated that they had received occasional letters and requests from citizens over several years asking for the change. They acknowledged that while the volume of such requests was not large, the repeated nature of them eventually influenced their decision. One religious organization even criticized FlixBus for using the number 666, accusing the company of spreading "satanism." However, FlixBus has now decided to revert to the original number 666. A spokesperson for the company, Alexander Kalenik, confirmed this move was intentional. He explained that the number was chosen as part of a deliberate marketing effort to enhance the visibility of the route, which is especially sought after during the summer tourist season. The route to Hel is highly popular among tourists, drawing visitors with its combination of natural beauty and historical sites. Hel is located at the end of a peninsula that stretches about 35 kilometers into the Gulf of Gdańsk. It is a well-known tourist destination in Poland, attracting visitors with its pristine beaches, historic buildings, and reputation as a haven for birdwatchers. The route’s popularity increases significantly during the summer months, making it a key component of regional tourism. The return of route number 666 has once again ignited discussions among locals and travelers alike. While some view the choice as a provocative marketing tactic, others see it as a nod to the route's history and cultural significance.
