Drivers are facing a nest at the end of July and August: more arrests and altered traffic on the Styrian motorway

Drivers heading through Slovenia’s Styrian motorway, A1, will face increased disruptions during late July and August due to ongoing maintenance and reconstruction work, according to local reports. The changes include temporary road closures and altered traffic patterns, affecting both directions of travel along key sections of the route. In the night of Thursday to Friday (July 30–31), maintenance work will take place on the A1 section between Blagovica and Lukovica. This will result in brief full closures in both directions, with detours via parallel regional roads. In the direction of Ljubljana, the motorway will be closed between the Blagovica and Lukovica exits from 10 PM to 1 AM. Entry to Blagovica toward Ljubljana will also be blocked during this time. In the direction of Maribor, the closure will occur between 2 AM and 5 AM, blocking entry to Lukovica toward Maribor and access to the Lukovica rest area in the Maribor direction. Earlier in the week, on the night of Monday to Tuesday (July 27–28), maintenance work was carried out on another segment of the A1. Between the Jasovnik tunnel and the Vransko exit heading toward Maribor, traffic was restricted to a single lane between 8 PM and 2 AM. These restrictions were part of broader efforts to improve infrastructure and manage traffic flow more effectively. Along the A1 stretch between Domžale and Zadobrova, reconstruction work is underway to establish a third traffic lane. As a result, traffic in both directions is moving on two narrowed lanes on the Maribor-bound carriageway. At the Domžale junction heading toward Ljubljana, a shortened acceleration lane has been set up, while at Šentjakob, a separate lane allows direct access to Zadobrova or Ljubljana, accompanied by an additional acceleration lane on the exit toward Litija. However, access to the motorway from Šentjakob heading toward Ljubljana is currently closed, with detour routes available via the Sneberje junction. These adjustments are expected to remain in effect until the end of August 2026. At the Ljubljana Šentjakob junction, access to the motorway in the direction of Ljubljana will remain closed until the end of August 2026 due to the ongoing reconstruction and setup of the third lane. Detour options are available via the Sneberje junction. Similarly, at the Ljubljana Sneberje junction, the exit from the motorway in the Celje direction will be closed until the end of August 2026, with detours rerouting through the previous Šentjakob junction. On the A1 section between the border crossing at Šentilj and the Maribor North (Pesnica) junction, comprehensive renewal of the Šentilj viaducts continues. Work was temporarily halted during winter but resumed in spring. Alongside viaduct repairs, resurfacing of the motorway and the Šentilj junction is taking place, including the installation of noise barriers. Traffic moves in both directions on a narrowed carriageway toward Austria, using a C2+1 traffic arrangement, which involves switching two lanes based on traffic volume. Adjustments are made depending on actual traffic density. Work in the Šentilj area is expected to continue until the end of September 2026. Between Slovenian Konjice and Dramlje, ongoing restoration work means traffic moves in both directions on the Ljubljana-bound carriageway, while the Maribor-bound carriageway is closed to all traffic until August 31, 2026. Access to the motorway in the Ljubljana direction at the Slovenian Konjice junction remains closed until that date. Traffic heading toward Ljubljana is redirected onto a single lane approximately two kilometers past the Slovenian Konjice junction, near the Golo Rebro pass. This adjustment helps maintain better traffic flow and reduces the risk of congestion near the Slovenian Bistrica South junction. From September 1 to October 4, 2026, traffic between Slovenian Konjice and Dramlje will resume on both carriageways, with two lanes per direction. Despite these improvements, adjusted traffic arrangements will still apply due to final works and occasional closures. Four weekend full closures of the Maribor-bound carriageway are planned during this period, with traffic temporarily diverted to the Ljubljana-bound carriageway. Additional full closures are also under consideration.
