Volkswagen's new under-the-hood feature, so low is its gas mileage.

Volkswagen je objavil specifikacije svojega prvega lastnega polnega hibrida, ki bo uporabljal bencinski motor 1,5 TSI Evo2 in hibridni modul TQ 250. Sistem bo združeval bencinski motor in elektromotor za maksimalno učinkovitost, zlasti pri nižjih hitrostih. Modeli Golf in T-Roc bodo imeli povprečno porabo bencina med 4 in 5 litri na 100 km. Sistem bo podoben Honda-e:HEV in Nissan-ePower, vključuje serio-vzporedni hibrid z manjšo baterijo kapacitete 1,6 kWh.

Volkswagen has unveiled its first fully hybrid powertrain, marking a strategic shift in response to stricter emissions standards and slower adoption of electric vehicles. The new system will be introduced in models such as the Golf and T-Roc, with fuel consumption estimates ranging from 4.0 to 4.5 liters per 100 kilometers for the Golf and 5.0 to 5.16 liters for the T-Roc. The powertrain combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor to maximize efficiency. The hybrid system features a 1.5-liter four-cylinder TSI Evo2 engine paired with a hybrid module TQ 250 supplied by Schaffler. This setup operates as a series-parallel hybrid, allowing the electric motor to drive the wheels at low speeds up to approximately 50 km/h while the internal combustion engine functions primarily as a generator. At higher speeds, the gasoline engine will engage directly through a torque converter and one gear, minimizing energy losses during conversion. The electric motor will assist as needed. A smaller battery with a capacity of 1.6 kilowatt-hours complements this configuration. The design aims to optimize fuel efficiency through regenerative braking and by keeping the gasoline engine running in its most efficient mode for much of the time. The internal combustion engine produces 110 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque, while the electric motor delivers 125 kW and 309 Nm. Together, these figures indicate that fully hybrid models will be more powerful than mild hybrids labeled 1.5 eTSI Evo. The decision to develop a full hybrid system comes amid pressure from Euro 7 emission regulations and the slow uptake of all-electric vehicles. By integrating a hybrid solution, Volkswagen seeks to balance environmental compliance with customer demand for fuel-efficient yet powerful cars. The Golf and T-Roc models will thus become key platforms for demonstrating this technology’s effectiveness in everyday driving conditions. Schaffler, a supplier of the hybrid module, plays a crucial role in enabling this transition. Its contribution ensures that the hybrid components meet high performance and reliability standards. The collaboration underscores Volkswagen's commitment to innovation within the constraints of current market realities. As production begins, consumers can expect improved fuel economy alongside enhanced performance. The estimated consumption rates suggest that drivers may see a notable reduction in fuel costs compared to traditional gasoline engines. However, the exact impact will depend on real-world usage patterns and driving habits. The introduction of this hybrid system reflects a broader industry trend toward hybrid technologies as a bridge to full electrification.
