The Lake of Venice has turned green

The Velencei-tó, one of Hungary's most famous lakes, has undergone a striking visual transformation over the past year, according to satellite imagery captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 program. Images released by Időkép show that the lake’s color changed significantly between June 2023 and June 2024. In June 2023, the water appeared as its usual grayish-green hue. However, by June 2024, the lake had turned a vivid green. This change is attributed to an increase in algae—microscopic plant-like organisms floating in the water—that have proliferated due to recent weather conditions. The combination of warm temperatures, uninterrupted sunlight, and low water levels has contributed to this phenomenon.

The dramatic shift in the lake’s appearance coincided with a historic low water level recorded on June 20, when the Agárd water gauge measured just 52 centimeters. This figure was lower than the previously recorded minimum from September 2022 by just one centimeter. Experts warn that if the current trend continues, with monthly water level declines similar to those observed during previous dry summers—between six and eight centimeters per month—the lake could reach a level of around 30 centimeters by early autumn. Such a drop would surpass the record set earlier this year.

The situation has raised concerns among local authorities. According to the Fejér County Government Office, the exceptionally low water levels caused by a drought-prone spring have fallen far below the average levels recorded over the past decade during the same period. This decline has already impacted several beaches, making them inoperable. The severity of the issue has been highlighted by local figures such as Hajtás Pajtásos Kürti Gábor, who walked along a path he created in the lakebed, crossing from Pákozd to Gárdony on foot. Additionally, artist Pápai Gergő produced a film titled "Eltűnő strand," which uses drone footage to depict the changing landscape of the Velencei-tó.

The alarming state of the Velencei-tó has sparked discussions about potential solutions to restore its water levels. Some suggest using treated wastewater or drawing water from the Danube River to replenish the lake. These proposals come amid growing concern over the long-term sustainability of the lake, especially given its significance as a tourist destination. Local businesses and communities reliant on the lake’s ecosystem face uncertainty about their future.

The situation underscores broader environmental challenges affecting water bodies in the region. Climate patterns, including prolonged periods of heat and reduced rainfall, have exacerbated the problem. Authorities are now under pressure to find sustainable ways to manage the lake’s water levels without compromising ecological balance or tourism.
