Increased Modesty Among the Divorced and the Widowed

Researchers from Norway analyzed national health data to assess mortality risk among individuals who separated, ended an unmarried relationship, or became widowed. The study, published in BMJ Public Health, followed three groups of approximately 20,000 people over a period from 1984 to 2019. Participants were categorized into those who remained married or in an unmarried partnership, those who separated or moved out, and those who became widowed. Researchers tracked mortality rates until January 2020 and used statistical models to evaluate whether losing a romantic relationship was linked to poorer health outcomes, including death. They found that separation or moving out was strongly associated with higher mortality compared to those who stayed together, even after accounting for factors like age, gender, lifestyle, self-reported health, and feelings of loneliness. Widowhood was also linked to a roughly 14% increased risk of premature death. The link between ending a relationship and mortality was stronger in later periods of the study and statistically significant only for women. While the study highlights a connection between living without a partner and mortality risk, the lead
