Violent threats to schools treated seriously: Police Minister

On Tuesday morning, multiple schools and organizations across New Zealand faced significant disruptions due to a wave of anonymous violent threats. These incidents led to widespread evacuations and lockdowns, prompting authorities to take swift action to ensure public safety. According to Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin, police are currently investigating these threats, which were primarily delivered via email. While the initial assessment suggests the risks are low, the nature of the threats—bomb-related—has necessitated a thorough and cautious approach.

The affected schools included Whangaparāoa School, Orewa College, and Christchurch Girls High School, among others. At Whangaparāoa School, Principal Kevin Cronin communicated with parents through the school’s website, informing them of an anonymous bomb threat. Despite doubts about the threat's validity, the school opted to prioritize the safety of its students and staff. Parents were instructed to collect their children from the school field area rather than the usual office location, where the administrative staff had vacated. Similarly, Orewa College implemented a lockdown due to an ongoing security incident, urging parents not to attempt contact with the school during this time.

Christchurch Girls High School entered lockdown shortly after 10 am following a threatening email received by the Ministry of Education. Acting Principal Sonja Bailey stated that police were present on site and confirmed the school could return to normal operations once the threat was assessed. The lockdown was lifted approximately 30 minutes later, allowing students and staff to resume their daily activities without incident.

In addition to schools, several media organizations, including Radio New Zealand (RNZ), also received threats. This added another layer of concern, highlighting the potential reach and impact of such malicious communications. Meanwhile, Ara Institute of Canterbury experienced similar issues when it received a bomb threat, leading to the evacuation of its Christchurch and Timaru campuses. Chief Executive Darren Mitchell emphasized the institute’s cooperation with law enforcement and urged caution until further information became available.

The recent incidents follow a pattern of similar threats in New Zealand. Earlier this year, an Invercargill teenager was arrested for allegedly sending nationwide bomb threats to various organizations, including schools and the Department of Corrections. This history underscores the importance of vigilance and the need for robust security measures within educational institutions and other public spaces.

Police Minister Mark Mitchell addressed the seriousness of these threats, emphasizing that they would be treated with utmost attention. He acknowledged the possibility that the threats could originate from overseas but noted there was no concrete evidence supporting this claim. Mitchell expressed concerns over individuals exploiting their free time to cause disruption, even if the intent was merely to create chaos.
