In 2025, funding for these shelters increased by 12.4%, reflecting a growing commitment to supporting survivors.

Now residing in one of these safe havens for three months, Nora has found a sense of security and stability. She credits the support she has received from the center's staff, including social workers and psychologists, for helping her regain confidence and set goals for the future. Nora expresses a desire to become a police officer specializing in the Unit for Family and Women’s Affairs (UFAM), aiming to assist other abused women who might feel afraid to come forward, especially those who are foreign nationals. With fluency in Arabic, French, Italian, and Spanish, she believes she can effectively communicate with and support a diverse range of individuals affected by domestic violence.

The environment within the center is described as calming and supportive, with motivational messages such as “Believe in yourself and everything will be possible” and “Don’t let your fears take over your dreams.” Additionally, the facility features artwork created during workshops that emphasize themes of love versus violence, reinforcing the importance of recognizing and avoiding toxic relationships. Ana Palencia, a coordinator and social worker with 30 years of experience, highlights the significance of residential care in allowing victims to recover from abuse and live in environments that promote dignity and hope. She emphasizes the value of informal spaces for healing and empowerment, alongside formal support structures.

Nora's transformation from a victim of violence to someone determined to help others reflects the broader impact of organizations dedicated to aiding survivors of domestic abuse.
