A New Zealand-based content creator specializing in fishing and underwater exploration, Henry Gibbs, was attacked by a grey reef shark during a dive off the coast of Fiji, according to footage shared online. The incident occurred during one of his early dives in the Pacific island nation and has since gone viral on social media. Gibbs, who uses a harpoon during his dives, described how the shark suddenly became aggressive and launched an attack while he was submerged with other divers. The attack took place after Gibbs and his group had been diving for about an hour and had moved into clearer open water, where they aimed to catch larger fish. He noted that several grey reef sharks were present near them, but this particular one lingered longer than the others. According to his account posted on Facebook, the shark began circling the group more aggressively before suddenly accelerating toward him. “I wasn’t sure exactly what caused the change in its behavior, but eventually it started swimming around us in tight circles, becoming increasingly agitated and even lunging at the boat,” Gibbs wrote. “Looking back, it should have been clear enough to stop the dive. I never thought a shark of that size could pose such a greater danger, and that was my mistake.” In the video, Gibbs can be heard warning the others before the attack, as the shark approaches. He managed to evade the harpoon shot and was bitten on the lower part of his scuba gear. The footage shows the shark circling beneath him and spinning around its axis before finally retreating. Gibbs later shared photos from the hospital, showing his injuries. Experts warn that grey reef sharks, known for their territorial nature, can become aggressive under certain conditions. They often display warning behaviors such as circling or sudden movements, which divers should recognize as potential threats. Gibbs advises fellow divers to immediately terminate a dive if they notice changes in a shark’s behavior, regardless of its size. He also recommends wearing black, non-reflective clothing to reduce visibility and avoid provoking the animal.
