'I believe that new faces will be able to step into the big shoes'

Jaka Blažič, a 36-year-old Slovenian basketball player who won the European championship with the national team nine years ago in Istanbul, expressed confidence that new faces will successfully step into big shoes ahead of the upcoming club season. The forward, currently playing for Cedevite Olimpija, is eagerly anticipating the start of the new competitive period after a summer of preparation. Before the team's official campaign begins, they will face six friendly matches during their training phase. Blažič emphasized the importance of building chemistry among players before the season starts. “Just like every season, we're all excited and nervous before the new competition begins,” he said during the team’s first training sessions. “We had a great summer, and now we’re ready to work hard and prepare well for the new season. Right now, it's crucial that we get to know each other, and I need to be one of those members who helps create the right 'chemistry.' We always talk about this 'chemistry,' but it really matters to build a healthy environment where everyone feels comfortable.” The veteran defender acknowledged the role of head coach Zvezdan Mitrović, whose meticulous approach to player roles on the court has been instrumental in shaping the team's dynamics. “My job is more focused off the court, helping establish that 'chemistry' and fostering positive relationships that we respect throughout the entire season,” Blažič added. “As long as I enjoy going to training and can support these young players, I'll keep playing basketball. So we'll go training by training, season by season, and see where or when it ends.” The roster changes have brought fresh energy to the team. Blažič, accustomed to such transitions, believes the departures of Aleksa Nikolić, DJ Stewart, and Umojo Gibson, players who found new, wealthier employers after last season, are adequately compensated by incoming talent. “The transfers you mentioned clearly show that things are going well at Cedevite Olimpija,” he remarked. “Since Mitrović arrived, many basketball players have managed to move up a level. These new guys are working hard and acting as positive characters. I hope day by day they become even better.” The team's training camp is set to begin soon, with the focus on integrating new players and reinforcing existing ones. Blažič highlighted the significance of unity and mutual trust within the squad. “It's essential to create a solid foundation,” he said. “Whether through teamwork or individual effort, we must ensure that every player feels valued and motivated.” The upcoming friendly matches will serve as a testing ground for the team's cohesion and readiness.
