A German university has sparked controversy with a recent study suggesting that electric vehicles are not yet fully climate-neutral due to emissions during their production and energy generation. The research, published as a white paper by researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), has drawn sharp criticism from a leading automotive engineering expert, Dr. Markus Lienkamp, who argues that the findings have been misinterpreted and that the study does not challenge the long-term benefits of electric cars. The study, which compared carbon dioxide emissions from different car propulsion systems, initially generated significant attention because it appeared to question the effectiveness of European Union climate policy. However, Dr. Lienkamp, head of the Chair of Vehicle Engineering at TUM, told the Science Media Center (SMC) that this was not the case. He acknowledged that current reductions in CO₂ emissions from switching to electric vehicles stand at around 41 percent when considering the entire lifecycle of a passenger car. But he emphasized that this finding is not new and that the study ultimately supports the view that electric vehicles will remain the most effective propulsion system in the future. Dr. Lienkamp criticized the study's interpretation, arguing that its conclusions were based on a flawed understanding of the data. He pointed out that while the study correctly acknowledges the current limitations of electric vehicles, such as emissions from power generation and battery manufacturing, it also highlights the potential for further improvements. For example, the study used data from 2018 to 2024 for the electricity mix, a period during which CO₂ emissions have already declined significantly. This trend, he argued, would give electric vehicles even greater advantages in both production and operation. Additionally, Dr. Lienkamp noted that the study did not adequately examine the impact of battery production, despite its critical importance. He also expressed skepticism over the suggestion that biofuels and e-fuels could serve as a bridge technology, calling such a conclusion “surreal” given the study’s own acknowledgment of the limitations of these alternatives. He suggested that the study’s summary led to conclusions that deviate from its core findings. The study, commissioned by TUM President Thomas Hofmann, analyzed 19 international studies and 47 scenarios. It concluded that the European Union’s climate strategy is being “substantially misdirected,” urging policymakers to consider the full life cycle of vehicles when assessing their environmental impact. The authors called for a more comprehensive evaluation of the climate footprint of cars, which they argue would allow for better assessment of alternative technologies. However, Dr. Lienkamp and other TUM professors were not involved in the study’s preparation. He described the work as lengthy, repetitive, and difficult to follow, noting that it lacked peer review. He spent five hours reading the document and still did not fully understand all parts. He questioned whether the study should have been published without such scrutiny, especially given its implications for industry and policy. Despite the criticism, the study has already reached key political figures. Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) praised the work, stating that it demonstrates the need for a “real end to the ban on internal combustion engines.” A senior member of his party echoed this sentiment, indicating that the research aligns with broader discussions about the future of transportation.
