The summer of 2025 has brought renewed activity to luxury properties linked to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, according to satellite imagery analysis and reports from independent observers. While official photographs rarely depict the private beaches, Olympic-sized pools, horseback riding trails, yacht docks, or hidden mansions associated with the ruling family, these locations remain active under the radar. As millions of North Koreans endure chronic food shortages, Kim’s summer has been marked by renovations of high-end residences and visits to a massive tourist complex designed to project an image of prosperity reserved for a select few. Satellite images obtained by NK Pro, a specialist media outlet tracking developments in North Korea, reveal that at least nine residences connected to Kim have undergone renovation work between late May and early June. These include a villa near Wonsan on the eastern coast, where workers have been repairing its roof. A recreational yacht valued at around seven million dollars is often moored nearby. In Pyongyang, another residential complex is undergoing similar upgrades, while a retreat near a lake and a sprawling family farm, complete with missile test platforms, are also being maintained. Experts estimate that Kim owns more than a dozen properties scattered throughout the country. Despite international sanctions restricting access to luxury goods, Kim continues to acquire high-end items. He has been photographed wearing Swiss luxury watches, traveling in Mercedes-Maybach vehicles, and, according to South Korean intelligence disclosures, installing German-made saunas in multiple residences. A 2024 report from a defense-linked research center in South Korea estimated that the regime has spent up to $1.8 billion maintaining privileges for the elite, including exclusive housing, medical care, and access to luxury goods. Like his father, Kim Jong-il, who used expensive watches, French cars, and imported vehicles to reward loyalty among top officials, Kim maintains control over the elite by distributing benefits inaccessible to ordinary citizens. This strategy reinforces the loyalty of key figures within the political hierarchy, ensuring their continued support in a system where power is tightly controlled. One of Kim's most ambitious personal projects is the Wonsan-Kalma resort complex, dubbed the “Benidorm of North Korea” by the press. The vast resort spans several kilometers of coastline and includes hotels, apartments, water parks, sports facilities, shopping centers, and artificial beaches capable of accommodating up to 20,000 visitors annually. The concept was conceived over a decade ago, during a discreet trip by a North Korean delegation to Spain’s Costa Blanca to study tourism complexes such as Benidorm and theme parks like Terra Mítica. The pandemic initially disrupted the project’s progress, delaying construction plans. However, recent satellite data indicates that work has resumed, suggesting that the government is prioritizing the completion of this facility despite ongoing economic challenges. The resort is intended to serve both domestic and foreign tourists, reinforcing the regime’s narrative of national advancement while providing a symbol of wealth and stability. The combination of luxury property maintenance, access to restricted goods, and large-scale infrastructure projects underscores the contrast between the lives of North Korea’s leadership and the hardships faced by the general population. While the outside world focuses on the country’s isolation and economic struggles, internal efforts continue to reinforce the status quo through material excess and strategic investment.
