These vessels were admired by millions as they passed by Liberty Island, the site where most immigrants entered the U.S. in the past. Among the ships was the oldest, the Elissa, built in Scotland in 1877 and now the official ship of Texas. Before being saved from destruction, the Elissa had been smuggling cigarettes in the Mediterranean Sea during the 1960s and 1970s.
