On the weekend of America's Independence Day, despite high temperatures and severe evening thunderstorms, many Americans proudly celebrated the 250th anniversary of the United States' founding. However, some individuals who view the U.S. as a racist and colonial creation did not participate in the celebrations. The event featured over 100 historic sailing ships from around the world showcasing their beauty along the shores of New York Harbor. These vessels were admired by millions as they passed by Liberty Island, the site where most immigrants entered the U.S. in the past. Among the ships was the oldest, the Elissa, built in Scotland in 1877 and now the official ship of Texas. Before being saved from destruction, the Elissa had been smuggling cigarettes in the Mediterranean Sea during the 1960s and 1970s.
