VCK turns its focus to Tamil nationalism post-election

VCK, a prominent political party in Tamil Nadu, is shifting its focus toward Tamil nationalism following the 2026 assembly elections, according to reports. The party's founder and current president, Thol. Thirumavalavan, has called for a large-scale public rally on August 17—his birthday, to emphasize Tamil identity and mobilize support. The event is set to take place in Ulundurpet, near Villupuram, and is being framed as a major political statement. In a prior announcement, Thirumavalavan had planned a public conference for May 17, but logistical challenges due to ongoing seat-sharing negotiations prevented it. This year, however, the focus has been redirected to August 17, which marks both his birthday and Tamilar Ezhuchi Naal, a day commemorating Tamil heritage. The party plans to make this event even grander, emphasizing Tamil cultural pride and political aspirations. Historically, the VCK has aligned itself with Tamil nationalism while asserting the integral role of the SC community within Tamil society. In recent years, the party has concentrated on anti-Sanathana campaigns to counter the influence of the BJP. Yet, a senior VCK leader clarified that the party has not abandoned Tamil nationalism, citing annual observances of Maaverar Naal (Great Heroes' Day) and consistent advocacy for Eelam Tamils' rights. According to a senior leader, Tamil nationalism encompasses broader issues beyond Eelam Tamils, including state rights and federalism.
