In the heart of the Šmihel valley, nestled among the peaks of the Mozirski mountains, a traditional celebration unfolded with the participation of young members of the Rural Youth Association. The 47th annual Sheep Fair, known locally as “svečna maša,” took place under clear skies and warm sun, drawing locals and visitors alike to witness a living tribute to rural life and customs. The event, held near the village of Šmihel, featured a blend of old traditions and modern enthusiasm, with participants engaging in age-old practices while showcasing their skills and creativity. The fair began with a ceremonial blessing of the tractors by Father Luka Mihevc, who conducted the service at a nearby meadow. The area was adorned with a Turkish fence, crafted each year by local resident Marko Goličnik, symbolizing both tradition and craftsmanship. The scene was set with grazing sheep, hay bales, and the scent of freshly cut grass, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of past generations. Young musicians opened the festivities with a performance that led the flock into a playful race, setting the tone for the day’s activities. Throughout the day, attendees were treated to a variety of homemade goods, including preserved foods, dairy products, honey, and handcrafted items. Children, barefoot and energetic, danced and sang under the guidance of Ane and Gregor Raka, whose music added a lively backdrop to the celebrations. The event highlighted the community's commitment to preserving its heritage, with families passing down knowledge and skills through hands-on demonstrations. Among the highlights was the demonstration of traditional wool processing techniques, where several men worked together to clean and prepare the fleece. Ivan Lesjak, known as Vanč, carefully combed the wool, handing it over to his wife, Marija Atelšek, also known as Micika, who skillfully wove warm trousers, caps, and jackets. Nearby, other participants showcased their abilities, such as weaving baskets, crafting wooden tools, and preparing aromatic resin for smoking. These activities reflected the deep-rooted connection between the land and the people who live off it. A key part of the festival was the competition involving the pulling of a flax rope, a test of strength and teamwork. Three teams participated, each demonstrating their physical prowess while honoring the role of firemen and rescue workers, who assisted during the event. The crowd cheered enthusiastically, recognizing the effort and dedication of all involved. The competition culminated in a celebration of the winners, with special recognition given to the women’s team, which emerged victorious. The festival also included a display of historical photographs and artifacts, offering insight into the long-standing tradition of the Šmihel choir, which celebrated its 80th anniversary this year. Plans are underway for a concert in September, further cementing the cultural significance of the region. The event served not only as a celebration of rural life but also as a fundraiser, with proceeds going toward supporting a recently burned farm in the Solčava area. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the festival continued with music, storytelling, and communal feasting, reinforcing the bonds within the community. The 47th Sheep Fair stood as a testament to the enduring spirit of Šmihel, where tradition meets innovation, and where the past continues to shape the present.
