The zoo celebrated the arrival of a new pair of lions, but five days later, tragedy struck

A pair of young lions named Uganda and Tayri arrived at the Zagreb Zoo with the goal of breeding within the framework of the European Breeding Programme (EEP). The animals, which belong to the northern African lion population listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), were introduced to the public on June 24. Five days later, tragedy struck when Uganda attacked and killed Tayri. The incident occurred just five days after the pair was officially presented to the public. According to reports from the zoo, Uganda and Tayri had been successfully paired in a controlled environment on July 10 and had since lived together outside the enclosure starting July 21. The zoo authorities stated that the two lions appeared to get along well during their initial interactions and showed no signs of aggression. An animal caretaker, speaking to Index, described the first meeting between the pair as a typical encounter, noting that while it might seem aggressive to visitors, it was part of the normal process of acquainting animals. He emphasized that everything proceeded as expected. Uganda and Tayri were brought to Zagreb specifically for breeding purposes under the EEP, which aims to support the conservation of endangered species through captive breeding programs. The zoo houses other lion siblings, Ayana and Nyota, who belong to the southern African lion population. These lions have been part of the zoo’s collection for several years and serve as both educational exhibits and potential breeding partners for future generations. The death of Tayri has raised concerns among conservationists and zoo staff about the challenges of managing interspecies dynamics in captivity. While breeding programs often involve careful selection and monitoring, conflicts can still arise due to differences in behavior, social structure, or health conditions. In this case, the sudden attack left zoo officials scrambling to address the situation. A spokesperson confirmed that the zoo is currently reviewing its protocols for introducing new pairs and will take additional precautions moving forward. The incident has sparked discussions about the ethical and practical aspects of using wild animals in breeding programs.
