Uttar Pradesh to train 10,000 ‘Gau Mitras’ for cow protection

The Uttar Pradesh government has unveiled a plan to train 10,000 individuals known as “Gau Mitras” as part of its ongoing cow protection initiative. Announced on August 16, 2026, the program aims to engage the younger generation, particularly members of Generation Z, in promoting cow welfare while simultaneously fostering economic development in rural areas. The initiative includes efforts to link cow protection with natural farming, women's empowerment, green energy, and job creation. The state government emphasized that the training will begin with selecting and educating master trainers, who will then disseminate knowledge to others. Priority will be given to individuals already showing interest in cow protection and related services. These master trainers will play a crucial role in establishing a widespread network of trained volunteers across villages. The ultimate goal is to create awareness about the socio-economic and environmental benefits of cow protection among the youth. According to an official statement, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has placed cow protection high on the government's agenda. The initiative seeks to move beyond traditional cow shelters by integrating them into broader economic activities such as utilizing cow dung and urine for biogas production, promoting natural farming practices, and creating employment opportunities. This approach is intended to enhance rural prosperity while ensuring sustainable development. Shyam Bihari Gupta, Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Go Seva Aayog, highlighted the government's commitment to making cow protection a multifaceted endeavor. He noted that the focus will be on educating children and young adults about indigenous cattle breeds, the value of cow service, and how cows contribute to the rural economy. The campaign will include village-level outreach programs aimed at informing participants about these topics. Currently, the state is conducting extensive efforts to protect and care for stray and destitute cattle. Over 7,500 cow shelters have been established, providing homes for more than 1.2 million animals. To support these efforts, the government has raised the daily financial assistance provided per animal from ₹30 to ₹50. Additionally, most cow shelters are equipped with surveillance systems using CCTV cameras to monitor conditions and ensure proper care. The initiative reflects a strategic shift in how the state approaches cow protection, moving from purely charitable efforts toward a model that integrates economic development and community engagement. By involving the youth and leveraging their enthusiasm, the government hopes to build a long-term framework for sustainable rural growth tied to cow-related industries. The program is part of a larger strategy to promote self-reliance and reduce dependency on external resources.
