USA: Restrictions on the residence of foreign students

The United States has introduced new restrictions limiting the duration of stay for international students and journalists. According to the newly announced rules, which could take effect in two months, foreign students holding student visas will be allowed to remain in the U.S. for no more than four years. International journalists will be limited to a maximum stay of 240 days, though they may apply for extensions of up to another 240 days. Chinese journalists' visas will be restricted to just 90 days. Previously, student visas were granted for the duration of their studies, while journalist visas were typically issued for five years. The proposed changes were first announced by the U.S. government in August 2025, after which approximately 22,000 responses were submitted to the Department of Homeland Security. However, the final regulations are largely unchanged compared to the announcement made last year.

United States to restrict student and media stay

The U.S. government has introduced stricter limits on the duration of stay for international students and media representatives. Previously, these groups could remain in the country indefinitely during their studies or work assignments, under the 'Duration of Status' policy. Now, international students and exchange students will be restricted to a four-year period, while journalists will face a cap of 240 days. Both groups can now apply for extensions without leaving the country. The changes were first proposed during President Donald Trump’s first term and were recently revived. The new rules aim to improve oversight of foreign nationals in these categories and will take effect 60 days after their official publication.

Bias read (Center): The article presents the policy change as a factual update without overtly criticizing or praising the administration's decision. It provides balanced information about the implications for different groups (students and journalists) and references past proposals without taking a clear ideological立场
