The United States Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on an India-based businessman, his wife, two other Indian nationals, and nine Indian companies for allegedly facilitating Iran’s evasion of international oil export restrictions. Under the Trump administration’s 'Operation Economic Outcast,' the US accused the individuals of running a vast criminal network that issued false flags and fraudulent maritime certifications to vessels transporting Iranian petroleum. The alleged operations, based in Chandigarh, involved impersonating maritime authorities from various nations, including Dominica, Eswatini, and several African and Caribbean states, to create unauthorized ship registries. These fraudulent services allowed sanctioned ships, some linked to Iran’s military and proxies, to continue moving oil since at least 2014. The sanctions target specific entities such as Oceaniek Technologies India and Aryavart Ship Management, aiming to disrupt the financial flows supporting Iran’s energy sector.
