US Consulate, FBI seek stronger EFCC ties on sextortion

U.S. officials, including the Consulate in Lagos and FBI representatives, have urged closer collaboration with Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to combat sextortion and transnational financial crimes. During a visit to the EFCC Lagos office, U.S. law enforcement praised the agency's work and emphasized the need for improved information sharing. The meeting followed recent FBI operations targeting Nigerian-based sextortion rings, which have been linked to multiple teen suicides in the U.S. In April 2025, 22 Nigerians were arrested in a major operation named Artemis, which investigated a scheme where teens were coerced into sharing explicit content and threatened with exposure unless they paid. The FBI reported over 54,000 sextortion victims in 2024, with financial losses exceeding $65 million over two years.
