US arrests far-right provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos

U.S. immigration authorities have detained right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulos and are preparing to deport him. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Yiannopoulos, a British national, was arrested at New Orleans International Airport on August 27. He was issued a final order of removal by an immigration judge on July 22 after failing to attend an immigration hearing. Yiannopoulos will remain in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) until his deportation. Yiannopoulos entered the United States in May 2019 and remained in the country beyond the duration of his visa. DHS stated that he "chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation’s laws." The agency described Yiannopoulos as an "illegal alien from the United Kingdom," using terminology often associated with former President Donald Trump and his supporters. ICE has directed family members and legal representatives to contact its office in Alexandria, Louisiana, which serves as a deportation hub for international flights. As of now, there is no official confirmation of Yiannopoulos’s current location, although ICE’s inmate registry suggests he is being held in Louisiana. Yiannopoulos, 41, once served as an editor at the right-wing website Breitbart News and was a vocal supporter of Trump’s immigration policies. However, he has since distanced himself from the former president, criticizing him for allegedly losing his way and becoming influenced by foreign interests. Despite this, Yiannopoulos continues to support aspects of the Republican agenda. Yiannopoulos rose to prominence in the early 2010s through his work at Breitbart News, where he played a central role in the "Gamergate" anti-feminist harassment campaign. He resigned from Breitbart in 2017 following the resurfacing of a video in which he appeared to condone pedophilia. Although he later apologized for the remarks, he has continued to promote far-right views, advocating for stricter immigration controls and mass deportations. In recent years, Yiannopoulos has been linked to rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West. Media reports indicate that he worked for Ye in various capacities, including during the rapper’s abandoned 2024 presidential campaign and a subsequent stint at the fashion brand Yeezy. Their professional relationship ended in 2024. Yiannopoulos has expressed controversial opinions on a range of topics, including transgender rights, Islam, Black Lives Matter, feminism, and the LGBTQ+ community. Despite identifying as gay, he has described himself as an "ex-gay" and has written articles promoting anti-feminist and anti-immigrant sentiments. Laura Loomer, a far-right activist, claimed to have reported Yiannopoulos to both ICE and the FBI, alleging that he incited violence against former President Trump and worked for Marjorie Taylor Greene, a former Republican congresswoman who fell out with Trump and eventually resigned from office. Yiannopoulos has not publicly commented on his detention. His case highlights the complexities surrounding immigration enforcement and the shifting allegiances of individuals within the broader conservative movement. ICE’s decision to detain him underscores the agency’s ongoing efforts to remove undocumented immigrants from the United States.
