UPSC Prelims 2026 results out: 13,343 candidates qualify for Mains exam

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) recently announced the results of the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026, marking a significant milestone in the annual recruitment process for prestigious government services such as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and Indian Police Service (IPS). With 13,343 candidates successfully passing the preliminary round, the list of those eligible for the upcoming Main Examination has been finalized. These results were officially released on June 15, 2026, following the conduct of the examination on May 24, 2026, which saw a participation of approximately 5.49 lakh candidates across the nation.

The preliminary examination, held nationwide on May 24, served as the first step in the multi-stage selection process designed to identify the most capable individuals for public service roles. The number of qualifiers for this year's exam stands at 13,343, a slight decrease compared to the previous year's figure of 14,161. This reduction comes despite the notification of 1,016 vacancies for the current recruitment cycle, down from the 1,087 vacancies announced in 2025. The difference in qualification numbers reflects the competitive nature of the exam and the varying difficulty levels of the questions posed to candidates.

Among the key aspects of the announcement was the requirement for all successful candidates to complete a series of mandatory online procedures between June 19 and June 28. These include paying the examination fee, updating personal and assistive details, selecting cadre preferences, and submitting the application for the Main Examination. Failure to comply with these requirements within the given timeframe would lead to disqualification from further stages of the examination. Additionally, even those who have already completed some of these steps must ensure they log in and reconfirm their details to generate their e-admit cards for the Main Examination, which is set to commence on August 21, 2026.

The UPSC has also emphasized that the release of marks, cut-off scores, and answer keys for the Preliminary Examination will occur only after the conclusion of the entire examination cycle, including the Indian Forest Service Examination. This policy aims to maintain transparency and fairness throughout the selection process, ensuring that all candidates receive consistent treatment and accurate information once the final results are declared.

For the candidates who have passed the preliminary stage, the journey is far from over. They must now navigate the complexities of the Main Examination, which is known for its rigorous academic demands and extensive syllabus coverage.
