Weather over Vienna: Döbling underground is flooded again

A severe thunderstorm swept over Vienna on Friday afternoon, leading to widespread flooding and disruptions across the city. The storm, driven by a low-pressure system over the North Sea and another moving eastward from France toward the Baltic Sea, caused heavy rainfall that overwhelmed several areas, including the underpass near the Mooslackengasse in Döbling. The incident unfolded quickly, with water rising rapidly in the underpass, trapping a driver from Upper Austria inside his vehicle. According to accounts from local media, the man described how the situation had changed dramatically. Initially, the water was not deep enough to pose a threat, but conditions shifted swiftly. “Suddenly there was water everywhere,” he recounted. His car’s engine stalled, and the electronics began acting erratically. After exiting the vehicle, the rain eased, leaving him waiting for assistance from the Österreichische Automobilclub (ÖAMTC). He expressed hope that his car would not suffer total damage. Further complications arose as additional drivers were forced to halt their vehicles just before the flooded underpass, resulting in temporary traffic chaos. A bus operated by Wiener Linien was also unable to pass through the area and had to wait until conditions improved. Emergency services responded promptly, sealing off the affected underpass and deploying efforts to drain the water and retrieve the stranded vehicle. Firefighters and police officers arrived swiftly, working together to manage the situation. The underpass remained closed for several hours while crews worked to remove the water and recover the vehicle. Fire department spokespersons noted that numerous calls came in during the afternoon, prompting heightened readiness among emergency personnel. While no injuries were reported, 33 firefighting units were deployed simultaneously due to the intensity of the downpour. The weather service, known as UWZ, explained that the storm was influenced by two distinct low-pressure systems, one over the North Sea and another approaching from France. These systems contributed to the heavy rainfall that impacted the Alpine region, with Vienna experiencing particularly severe effects. Local authorities have since issued advisories urging caution following such extreme weather events.
