Milei official sparks conflict with China over tweet: Embassy complaint

A diplomatic dispute has emerged between Argentina and China over a controversial tweet posted by Juan Pablo Carreira, a government official under President Javier Milei. Carreira, who serves as the Director of Digital Communication for Milei's administration, made the remarks on social media, drawing immediate criticism from both Chinese authorities and some Argentine politicians. The incident occurred on Saturday, June 30, when Carreira took to his account, known as "Juan Doe", to criticize the CCP for its alleged role in the disaster. He wrote, "The Communist Party dressed as 'entrepreneur' kills," referencing the tragedy that struck Nepal, where the majority of victims were reportedly located. His comments came amid ongoing discussions about the collapse of a hydroelectric project near a glacier on the border with Nepal, which was being developed by a state-owned Chinese company. In response, the Chinese Embassy in Argentina issued a strongly worded statement late Monday, accusing Carreira of spreading malicious rumors driven by ideological bias. It stated that the official had defamed the CCP and damaged China’s international image. Carreira cited an unspecified source claiming that over 2,500 Nepalis died instantly in the landslide, a number higher than the officially confirmed count of 1,000 fatalities. He linked the incident to historical disasters attributed to communist governance, including Chernobyl, the Aral Sea crisis, the Great Leap Forward, and the Holodomor. These references underscored his broader ideological critique of state-controlled industries and their perceived failures. Despite his claims, the accuracy of the figures he used remained unclear.
