Argentina’s State Intelligence Secretariat (SIDE) reported receiving over 40,000 applications within 24 hours of launching a public recruitment drive under President Javier Milei’s administration. This initiative marks a significant departure from traditional intelligence recruitment methods, which historically relied on personal networks, family ties, and police referrals to ensure loyalty. The new system allows any eligible Argentine citizen to apply through a public competition, aiming to professionalize the agency and base hiring on evaluation results rather than connections. As part of a broader reorganization led by SIDE chief Cristian Auguadra, who reports to presidential advisor Santiago Caputo, the agency is also implementing voluntary retirement programs expected to affect around 400 agents. Applicants who pass initial screening will enter basic training at the National Intelligence School in Buenos Aires, where the goal is to establish merit-based entry mechanisms.
