Olivera Katarina, known professionally as Olivera Vučo, died on Tuesday, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most celebrated performers of her time. Born on March 5, 1940, in Belgrade, she began her career in theater before transitioning to film. Her breakthrough came with her role in the 1967 film Zbiralci perja (also known as Skupljači perja), directed by Alexander Saša Petrović. In the film, she portrayed the character of Lenci, a role that brought her international recognition. The film was a critical success, winning the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 1967 and being nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe. Olivera Katarina, who was still known as Olivera Vučo at the time, showcased both acting and singing talents, particularly in performing the song Đelem, đelem, which became a highlight of the film. Her performance earned praise for its emotional depth and musicality, especially for its rendition of Nova.rs. Throughout her career, she appeared in numerous films, including Vojnik, Ima ljubavi, nema ljubavi, and Partizani. She also performed songs for Josip Broz Tito, the former president of Yugoslavia. “He always responded well whenever I sang, and he liked me,” she wrote in her autobiography.
