United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has completed Cohort 21 of its Graduate Management Accelerator Programme (GMAP), graduating 374 young professionals into its workforce. The ceremony took place at the Landmark Events Centre in Lagos on Thursday, 20 August 2025, celebrating graduates from Nigeria and other African countries where the bank operates. This marks another milestone in UBA's ongoing efforts to cultivate future leaders through its flagship talent development initiative. The GMAP programme, designed to equip young professionals with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in the banking sector, has now graduated over 5,000 individuals since its inception. Participants receive mentorship, training, and hands-on experience aimed at enhancing their career prospects and contributing to the growth of the financial services industry in Africa. The current cohort includes 223 women and 151 men, selected from UBA operations across eight African nations. Of these, 345 graduates hailed from UBA Nigeria, while 29 were recruited from subsidiaries in Guinea, Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, Uganda, Zambia, and Côte d’Ivoire. During the graduation ceremony, UBA’s Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, emphasized the importance of customer service as a key differentiator in an increasingly competitive banking landscape. As technology continues to homogenize financial products, Elumelu argued that superior service remains a unique advantage. “Products can be commoditised, but service never can, because there is always a differentiator in how you serve and how you create,” he stated. He further noted that the ability to leverage technology to enhance customer satisfaction sets UBA apart. Elumelu also addressed the graduates directly, expressing confidence in their potential to lead the bank into the future. He urged them to maintain their passion, embrace hard work, discipline, and excellence throughout their careers. His remarks underscored the significance of the GMAP programme in shaping the next generation of banking professionals who are equipped to meet the evolving demands of the industry. UBA’s Group Managing Director/CEO, Oliver Alawuba, congratulated the new intake and framed their graduation as a commissioning rather than a conclusion. He highlighted the shared ambition of the graduates to build Africa’s future together. Alawuba reminded them that their initial postings might not align with personal preferences but should be viewed as platforms for growth. He stressed that no assignment is too minor to demonstrate exceptional attitudes or too modest to inspire excellence. Alawuba also called on the graduates to uphold the bank’s standards in all roles, emphasizing unity among the diverse group of professionals representing different backgrounds and experiences. He encouraged them to learn at a pace that outstrips the speed of change in the global economy, to value trust above all else, and to transform potential into tangible results. These insights reflect the core values of UBA, excellence, enterprise, and execution, that guide both the organization and its employees. The Graduate Management Accelerator Programme serves as a structured entry point for young graduates, blending theoretical knowledge with practical exposure in critical areas such as product design, trade finance, and customer experience. It is part of a larger strategy to develop talent within the Group and prepare a new generation of bankers capable of driving innovation and sustainable growth across Africa. The success of this programme underscores UBA’s long-term vision for cultivating leadership and fostering economic development in the continent.
