UAAP ‘perpetually’ bans Tab Baldwin, allows Ateneo to compete in Season 89

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) has permanently banned former Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball head coach Tab Baldwin following an internal investigation into the deaths of two student-athletes during a team-building activity last June. Despite the ban, Ateneo has been cleared to participate in the upcoming UAAP Season 89, which begins in early September. The decision was announced on August 7, nearly two months after the tragic incident involving 18-year-old Rene Baterbonia and 21-year-old Divine Adili, who drowned during a seawater activity in Dipaculao, Aurora. The UAAP stated that Baldwin, a six-time champion with the Blue Eagles, would face a "perpetual ban," preventing him from engaging in any capacity, coaching, administrative, advisory, or otherwise, with the league. This includes being barred from entering any UAAP competition venue. The league emphasized that the sanction is final and non-appealable. Alongside Baldwin, several members of his coaching and support staff were suspended indefinitely from all UAAP-related activities. These include former team manager Epok Quimpo, assistant coaches Dean Castaño, Sandro Soriano, Jon Jacinto, and Hernan Domingo, strength and conditioning coaches CJ Elumba and Grant Dearns, and physical therapist Jerick Rueca. Their suspensions can be appealed to the UAAP board under existing rules and procedures. The incident occurred on June 8 when Baterbonia and Adili were among a group of students participating in a team-building exercise organized by the Ateneo men’s basketball team. Both individuals later succumbed to their injuries, prompting widespread scrutiny over the safety protocols and supervision of such activities. Government agencies, including the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and the National Bureau of Investigation, conducted separate investigations into the incident. Their findings indicated that the student-athletes involved were not held accountable for the tragedy, and the remaining players were deemed victims rather than culpable parties. In response to these conclusions, the UAAP acknowledged the grief and loss suffered by the Ateneo community while allowing the Blue Eagles to continue competing in Season 89. The league cited the athletes' wish to honor the memory of their fallen teammates through competition as a key factor in its decision. However, the UAAP imposed conditions on Ateneo’s continued participation. The university must conduct a comprehensive reassessment of the organizational structure and management of its men’s basketball team, extending this review to its broader athletics program. The goal is to enhance protections, welfare measures, accountability mechanisms, and institutional oversight for student-athletes. The UAAP described its actions as both protective and restorative, aiming to hold individuals accountable while reinforcing safeguards for student-athletes. The league stressed the importance of learning from the incident to create a safer and more responsible environment within the association. The decision reflects a balance between addressing the harm caused by the tragedy and ensuring that similar incidents are prevented in the future. Season 89, hosted by Far Eastern University, is set to begin on September 12. The Ateneo men’s basketball team will take the court under new leadership and with revised policies aimed at improving athlete welfare. The outcome of the ongoing appeals process for the suspended staff members remains uncertain, though the league has made it clear that Baldwin’s ban is definitive. As the new season approaches, attention will focus on how effectively Ateneo implements the changes mandated by the UAAP and whether these reforms lead to long-term improvements in athlete safety and institutional responsibility.
