In the past week, ten pickpocketing incidents were reported in Rijeka and the surrounding area of Opatija, according to the Primorsko-Goranska County Police. These crimes primarily occurred in crowded places such as buses, markets, shopping centers, restaurants, and public gatherings. Nine Croatian citizens and one Danish citizen were affected, with total material damage estimated at over 4,200 euros. Most of the thefts involved stealing wallets containing cash, personal documents, and credit cards. One notable case involved a 73-year-old Croatian woman whose wallet was stolen in Rijeka, including her credit card and recorded PIN. The thief used the card to withdraw cash and make purchases, causing an additional loss of around 720 euros through computer fraud. The police warn that pickpockets often operate in groups during tourist season, using distraction tactics to steal from victims.
